5 Tips to Stay Focused While Studying

Updated: May 11, 2019

1. Clean Your Space

Make sure you tidy your desk before you start studying so you have a place to put all your revision material and space everything out. This will also make sure you don't get distracted with the things lying around you.

2. Turn Your Phone Off

Before you even begin you need to turn than phone off. Although you'll promise yourself you won't look at it- you will. Half way through you'll turn it on to look at the time and before you know it you'll be half way through your instagram feed and 20 minutes has just flown by. Don't do it to yourself! To make it easier, you can download the app 'flipd' (FREE) to disable apps for a certain amount of time.

3. Minimise Background Noise

I know many people enjoy to listen to music when they study or work (i'm guilty of this too). As much as this makes the task at hand much more enjoyable, i often find myself singing along to the lyrics and it it makes the task much longer to complete. I recommend that if you want to listen to music try to find some with no lyrics so you don't get toooo distracted. Also if you have a noisy household make sure you close the door or find a nice quite space. psssssst- make sure it's clean. ;)

4. Have a Goal and a Time Frame

Before you start studying, decide what you want to achieve and in how long. I recommend spending no less then 20 minutes and no more than 1 hour on a your goal. Set a timer and work until you complete the task or the timer rings. If you still haven't finished the task when the timer goes off have a break, have Kitkat. Haha, but seriously have some food. Don't spend more then 20 minutes on your break, otherwise you'll lose focus. Then, go back to your task and complete it.

5. Keep Yourself Alert

We all sometimes wonder off in our own thoughts having to reread the content 20 billion times cause it's not getting through. Never fear, there are ways to tackle this. Sometimes this issue might mean you're just tired. Take a quick nap or go to sleep and try again the day after. Other ways of battling this could be to have some coffee (or caffeine pills if you don't like coffee), go outside and have some fresh air, or sometimes a shower does the trick (swimming in a pool is good too).
